Jamaica is known for
many wonderful things. It is an island that is embedded with a beautiful and
fascinating culture; and is home to one of the most popular musical genres in
the world – Reggae. The famous Jamaican musician that is renowned for his
distinguished reggae sound that is celebrated all over the world is the late
Bob Marley. Jamaica’s other music includes jazz, folk, gospel and calypso;
however reggae is the music that stands out in the culture above all other
types.
Jamaica’s authentic reggae music began in the 1970’s. The sound evolved from
rocksteady, and was a mixture of musical rhythms that included soul music from
America, and the popular and traditional Jamaican mento sound. Reggae music
was popularized with Bob Marley and the Wialers who had gained success
internationally. Marley’s music was enjoyed for its simple and true lyrics
that spoke of redemption and love. As the years progressed new waves of music
evolved and popularized in Jamaica, such as ragga and Dancehall. Now there is
a variety of music that you will hear and enjoy during your visit to Jamaica.
You will be dazzled by the dancing and feel your body flow with the rhythm of

Since Jamaica is known for
its reggae music and being the home of Bob Marley, you can experience
locations that have been designated to honor Bob Marley and Reggae music; they
are
Bob Marley Experience – This is located in Montego Bay and pays a
multimedia tribute to the late musician. Here visitors can see a number of
different memorabilia items and watch an insightful and fascinating video all
abut Bob Marley’s life in the theatre.
Bob Marley Mausoleum – This is the grave site of Bob Marley and his
half-brother; and is located in the village of nine mile, where Marley lived
for a few years of his young life. Here many fans and tourists of the
musician come to pay their respects to this excellent artist. The mausoleum
has interesting memorabilia and is close to a few shops and a restaurant.
Each year in Nine Mile there are reggae concerts held in Marley’s memory on
his birthday, February 6th.
Bob Marley Museum – This is the biggest tourist attraction located in
Kingston. It is filled with displays and artifacts that pay tribute to Bob
Marley and his music. The Museum was actually the house where he recorded his
music and where he lived until his death. This is a must see for any Bob
Marley fan.
Bob Marley Week – This is an annual festival that is held each February
for one week during Bob Marley’s birthday. It is a grand celebration that
features many great events, which pay tribute to the musician’s memory. There
are karaoke contests, exhibitions, symposiums, and even a fashion show.
